Love this coffee press! We have the older version 32 Oz which we loved but the handle broke and we wanted to spring for the 48 Oz. We decided to go with the new one and bought three as my mother and brother wanted one as well. I believe it’s the first of this line, my only comment is that the spout tends to drip a little after you finish pouring coffee, just from spout channel not being as curved like our previous model. Kinda picking at straws here, this is an awesome press, built very well, and sturdy for clumsy people like myself – could definite take some abuse if you took it camping or to a cottage. This press is definitely worth every penny – good job Planetary Design team.

I had a Bonjour 48oz coffee press. The first cup always came out perfect. The second and third, bitter and more bitter. I thought it was because I had to microwave the second and third cup. Now I realize it was from the grinds remaining in the carafe. With Bru-Stop technology the first cup and last cup taste exactly the same. Hats off to Mandy Lea Photo for introducing me to this exceptional product.

  3. Terri Thorne

The most amazing coffee press!!! Finally one that we can use at home and on the road that wont break and makes an incredible cup of hot coffee. Highly recommend….every morning you’ll wake up and have the best cup of coffee 🙂

I really wanted to love the new Brutrek, but we much prefer the prior model. The top is very hard to screw on tightly enough so that the spout faces forward to align with the handle (even for my husband), and it’s hard to unscrew if you do get it to align because it’s so tight. As someone else mentioned, it drips a bit more than the prior version. The metal press also feels less substantially built than the prior version. Like the prior version, it makes a terrific pot of coffee and keeps it warm for a really long time. We just feel that the re-design was actually a step backwards.

      Hi Jennifer,

Thanks for your comments. Based on similar feedback, we are in the process of making updates to the Basecamp French press to improve the screw top threading, as well as address the drip issue. We appreciate hearing from our customers so we can continue to make the best outdoor presses on the market!

I’m a very happy first-time user of a French Press, specifically the Basecamp 32oz. French Press. At home we rely on an OXO drip coffee maker and we’ve been really pleased with the coffee this unit makes.

As my wife and I are now just envisioning ourselves as tiny getaway house and soon trailer campers, we (I) thought we should figure out how we could make coffee while on the road. Big fans of Mandy Lea and her videos on camping in her @Tab 400 we gravitated towards the Planetary website and products. In truth, because the products are made in China, I hesitated for a few months, but after doing some research, (1) the Basecamp French Press clearly had the most positive feedback and best features and (2) there’s no equivalent product manufactured in other countries that we have found. Should Planetary decide to manufacture future products in the US, I’ll gladly pay 50% or 100% more, but I suspect I’m in the minority.

Now to the press itself. It’s extremely well made and the Bru-Stop feature really works as advertised! I had to figure out how to adjust the grind of the coffee to work well with the French Press, but once that was accomplished, it really made an excellent cup of coffee. The double-wall stainless steel construction keeps the coffee warm for an hour or two with no problem, depending upon the ambient outside temperature.

One think I really appreciated is that Planetary sells a replacement screen for the press, which is the only part that might wear out or fail. That says a lot about the company and the way they treat their customers. You don’t have to throw out the whole French Press if just the filter needs to be replaced.

Overall I’m very pleased. I’ve since made two other purchases of Planetary products.

I want to indicate that while my review is an honest appraisal of the product, I was encouraged by a discount on future products to leave a review.

I’m really enjoying using the 32oz French Press at home. It keeps my coffee hot and fresh all morning. Easy to clean. No problems at all. Great invention!

  7. Dan Walsh (verified owner)

We used the Basecamp 32oz French Press on a recent camping trip, and I have to say the coffee was the best I’ve ever had while camping. In fact, I wish we had used the French Press to make coffee in our hotel room on either end of the camping trip. My sister in law saw the French Press and Airscape cannister and immediately ordered one.

  8. Jeffrey Anvari-Clark (verified owner)

Overall, great french press! The new tech does a MUCH better job of keeping grounds and dregs out of the coffee, so that the flavor is consistent down to the end. Plus, it retains heat really well. I’ll make the coffee at 7, my wife will drink it at 8, and it’ll still be hot. As mentioned in another review, my only quibble is the dribble, hence losing the star. When finishing the pour, a couple drops will drip down – make sure you’re pouring over the sink or cloth you don’t mind drop stains on.

  9. Campbell G. (verified owner)

Great French press. It is easy to use and no mess. Really easy to keep clean. Make sure you have the stainless steel disc up the right way. 😁

  10. SJ Edelen (verified owner)

Works perfectly. Love using it camping.

  11. Jennifer Wilkinson (verified owner)

I can’t wait to buy another one. I am a coffee fanatic and i am so glad someone referred me to Planetary design. The Press works perfectly and keeps the coffee hoT.

  12. Eric Ipsen (verified owner)

I had a previous version, and I have to admit I am a bit disappointed with the new model. It drips quite a lot when pouring, particularly when thermos is close to full. And the screw top doesn’t really align with the spout when fully closed. Also, the pot will stop pouring and seem to be empty, but when I open it to clean there is still quite a bit of liquid left. Otherwise, it seems sturdy and holds heat well.

    • Sarah

Hi Eric, thanks for your feedback. We’re making changes to the pour spout so that it doesn’t drip. I will pass this along to customer service so they can follow up about the other issues!

  13. Jeff

I really love our Basecamp 48oz french press and have been using it since May. The Bru Stop feature makes the whole concept of an insulated press/pot really make sense…and the insulating capacity of the unit is top notch, keeping coffee at a drinkable temp for hours. While I find the fact that the spout design makes it nearly impossible to pour a cup without dripping annoying, it’s not a deal breaker for me on this otherwise outstanding product. In another review, I notice that you are making design changes to the lid/spout to address this issue. That being the case, it would be great if you made it so the redesigned lid could be retrofit to the current model to fix the issue without needing to purchase an entire new unit. Lastly, I find the plunger extremely hard to push, which I assume is because the Bru Stop plate is significantly restricting the flow of liquid as this happens. Am I doing something wrong or are there any tricks to make this easier? I tend push a little ways…then back off a fraction of an inch, then push a little further…until I get to the top of the grounds at the bottom of the pot. I always get the job done, but do somewhat miss that satisfying experience that’s part of using a french press. Again, this isn’t a big deal but if anyone has any tips or tricks, I’d love to hear it.

    • Planetary Design

Hi Jeff, thanks for providing feedback on this. The 48 oz tends to have the most resistance with the Bru Stop plate, since it’s our largest coffee press. We recommend a couple things: 1) make sure you have the snap lid open before pressing since that will help allow air to escape; 2) as you mentioned you were doing, you can lift up on the press when meeting resistance, then continue pressing down; 3) in between uses, remove the screen to wash it out as the small particulate from grinding coffee tends to build up and get stuck. Hope this helps – let us know!

  14. Vicki Pine

Went to the Glamping Show at Arapahoe Fair Grounds in Colorado and was lucky to meet the BruTrek team. Bought a “blue” French Press and immediately came home to make a good cup of coffee. WOW!!! You have a winner here. Much better than even the old glass French Press I have had for years and certainly better than the k-cups I use every day. Yep, I can use it in the outdoors, but it will be a common fixture every day in my Colorado kitchen! Will need to buy a few more for gifts. I am already hooked and my camping friends will LOVE this too. Thanks for your time and hopefully we can get together for business! Keep on glamping!!!

  15. Adam Trzinski (verified owner)

Super easy to use and clean, makes awesome coffee, keeps it warm for hours. So stoked I heard the hype about this press because it really does rule.

  16. Sylvia (verified owner)

This is a very nice press! Very well made! The only reason that I didn’t give it 5 stars is that I haven’t had time to brew a pot. But I’m excited to begin using it in my new RV.

  17. Dwaine Linger (verified owner)

We are enjoying our 48 ounce press can make a full press first thing and it is still hot after chores. Like others ours doesn’t screw on so it lines up properly to pour and yes it drips. But we can take it on the road also and have warm coffee or tea

  18. Jason Terry (verified owner)

This thing is awesome. I bought this for camping trips, but we tried it out in our house and have since used it every morning for the past 5 days. A family member joined us yesterday and just bought a white one after seeing it and tasting the coffee result. We have been doing drip coffee forever. Never knew how much of a difference a French Press would make. Also, the family member that came over stopped using her French Press because it was too small for her family in the morning. The 48 ounce version solves that problem. So thank you Planetary Design for creating this great product. And yes, I am excited to write this review for a 25% off coupon so I can buy more accessories. 🙂 That doesn’t change the rating though… And by the way, I found this on a YouTube channel about Overlanding. Their channel is PlayingWithSticks. Fun!

    • Grace Frautschi

We are so glad you’re loving the 48oz BaseCamp! Thanks for your review, we will have to check out Playing With Sticks on youtube.

  19. Steve Duranceau (verified owner)

Built like a (very smartly designed) tank. I’ve been looking for a simple way to make good coffee for 4-6 people while camping for a while and the 48oz BaseCamp seemed to fit bill perfectly. Large, rugged, easy to clean, no additional filters to mess with, insulated, and somewhat more packable than other similarly sized coffee makers. I really like the fact that the handle can be unbolted and removed to help it pack into my camp box a little more compactly. It’s the only large coffee maker I could find that had this capability. The BruStop plunger actually works very well to halt coffee extraction and the vacuum insulation is as good as any Yeti or Stanley Master thermos. This is a product I will have for many years to come and if the plunger ever does start to wear they have very reasonably priced replacement parts available. If you’re looking for a very well built insulated french press, look no further. PS, their insulated camp cups are a great addition to this coffee maker!

    • Koby Pederson

Steve! Thank you for using the 48oz BaseCamp and leaving a review. We are glad to hear you can make high-quality coffee for you and your friends on camping trips!

High quality, rugged, and very easy to use. Love the red rock color.

    • Dane Gillespie

AJ! The Red Rock is my favorite as well. Glad you like it!

  21. waistdeeppow (verified owner)

Well made, well insulted and the “no grinds in the cup” feature works like a charm. I’ve had a ton of French presses and this one is my favourite by far

    • Dane Gillespie

Thank you for the review! Glad you are enjoying the patented Bru-Stop™ Technology!

  22. jeff (verified owner)

The best coffee press! Makes great coffee and keeps it hot. I make coffee at 345am and take my share (18oz, about 1/3 the thermal mass) and the rest is still hot and delicious at 630am when my wife and oldest daughter pour theirs for work. I have no complaints about the design but at 48oz, we have to ration and make extra on weekends when other coffee drinkers in the home want a cup. I have one 48oz press in the home that’s mine, I have one that belongs to our Scout Troop, and the one I just bought will be a wedding gift for one of my other daughters. So far, two other adults in our Scout Troop have bought the same press, that’s how good they are.

    • Koby Pederson

We appreciate your review Jeff! That’s amazing that you and many others are enjoying hot coffee from the BaseCamp French Press.

  23. shokod (verified owner)

I’ve used this twice. It is beautiful and feels quite sturdy and well built. It effectively solves the problem I’ve had with other french presses in that it does “stop” brewing and therefore stays yummy if you leave it in the press (which keeps it insulated very well!). The only reason it’s not 5 stars is because I’ve noticed the same problem as other reviewers have with the pouring – it does dribble a bit and I feel like the spout needs to be more ‘acute’ . I have the 48oz in red FWIW.

  24. jehuv (verified owner)

Awesome french Press!!! The only thing I would like is for them to offer a bigger model. I got the 48 oz. one but we have a big family and when ever we use it we have to make at least two pots. Other than this is a good USA made product.

  25. Full Caff con half&half (verified owner)

Delicious brew and good construction, despite Chinese production!
Wonderful insulation, “plunged” just fine, and free shipping appreciated.
Thank you for future redesign of spout & threading, is a bit difficult to align when closing. Hope you continue tabletop models with the updated filters, too. Would that a USA mfgr. Could be found! Also, might using a burr grinder as opposed to blade reduce the “muddiness” a bit? Do use a coarse grind. Thanks for forthcoming coupon and great customer service!

  26. Jeff (verified owner)

Update. After over a year of daily use, I still think this is a GREAT product. I’ve read some other reviews and want to add a few comments: I’ve bought four presses and have several friends who’ve bought one on my recommendation; I know of two lids that don’t screw on and line up (handle to spout). A little annoying, but still great coffee. The drip at the end of the pour: it’s all technique. I often have to ‘train’ new adults on Scout campouts in the ways of the Basecamp. After a few cups, most get it and many go on to get a press of their own (I do keep a cloth on hand to wipe the side though – got to keep it clean). And now something new: the lid flap is a weak link. I’m about to order my second replacement assembly meaning my flap has failed (cracked) twice in just over a year. Sadly, the part that cracks due to the stresses of fair-wear-and-tear is not available separately (I see a similar part for an insulated mug). To get my press back into service, I have to spend $14 and get a lid, plunger, filter, and BruStop plate I don’t need. If you read all this, you might be wondering “why 5 stars?” The Basecamp is just that good.

  27. Bryce Kuder (verified owner)

Super excellent press! I love this thing!

  28. George Rodgerson

This wonderful devise has completely changed the way I make coffee at home and while camping. I did away with my big electric coffee machine and have gone to this better brewer. Taste of coffee has improved. I do have a complaint that I hope can be improved. The base of the press regularly detaches and gets stuck in the thermos. It does not hold securely to the rod. I am afraid that someday it will just quit attaching to the rod. Worst case scenario, morning brew at the campsite.
