DOMA Coffee: Sustainable Roaster of the Month

At DOMA Coffee, they don’t just love coffee; they are obsessed with it. From their humble beginnings in a garage in the year 2000, DOMA has become a household name in the coffee industry, thanks to their commitment to sustainability, quality, and community. Today, we are excited to feature DOMA Coffee as our Sustainable Roaster of the Month for April.

Learn What Makes Their Coffee Stand Out From the Rest

COFFEE

CULTURE

MEANING

Doma Coffee Custom Airscape Coffee Canister

DOMA’s tagline “coffee | culture | meaning” sums up their mission perfectly. They are not just a coffee company; they are a movement. Their obsession with coffee roasting and love for things well-crafted has led them on a crazy journey to become the company they are today. But the best part of this journey is all the cool people they have met along the way. They use DOMA to do better in their communities. From cycling to climate change advocacy – their coffee has meaning outside of the cup. DOMA uses its business to spark ideas, support artists, and keep the local communities and waterways healthy.

Sustainability Efforts

DOMA has always been a pioneer in roasting organic coffee in Idaho. They have advocated for origin-level farming practices that protect the environment, the people working at the farms, and the product itself. DOMA sources around 50% of their coffee beans directly from the farms, which means they have a close relationship with their coffee producers. They fund high-elevation irrigation structures in Guatemala and buy mixed containers from their direct-trade farmers.

DOMA’s sustainability efforts do not stop there. Locally, they compost all of their coffee grounds, give their burlap to local farmers, source local products for their tasting room, including oat milk produced in Idaho, use rechargeable electronics, and more. Their roaster has always been eco-friendly, using 25 percent less natural gas than a traditional roaster. They are expanding to a larger roaster, hand-built by a local company, and chose to install a thermal oxidizer to remove pollutants from the exhaust. They roast to order to minimize waste – any extra coffee gets donated to local shelters.

DOMA’s sustainability efforts go beyond the coffee industry. One of their favorite sustainability programs is their partnership with Protect Our Winters (POW). They donate sales from their DEEP coffee to POW. DEEP is a relationship Guatemala coffee packaged in a reusable or recyclable metal tin. POW lobbies for climate change reform at the national level. DOMA Coffer also supports their local waterway alliances, the Spokane Riverkeeper and Kootenai Environmental Alliance, because coffee (and life) isn’t very good without clean water.

CAMPAIGN

DOMA encourages customers to bring reusable cups. If customers need a single-use cup, they source only bioplastics through Eco-Cups, or buy one of their reusable cups and get your drink free and discounted coffee every time you bring your reusable cup back in.

At DOMA Coffee, they believe that coffee is more than just a beverage. It’s a culture, a community, and a way of life. They use DOMA to do better in their communities near and far, supporting artists, environmental causes, and the farms of coffee producers. Thank you, DOMA Coffee, for being our Sustainable Roaster of the Month for April.
