Planetary Design Supports the Food Recovery Network

The passion of young people has been a driving force for all sorts of movements throughout history. Their enthusiasm and gusto allows them to do great things, oftentimes with little support from those with more experience than them. The students that founded the Food Recovery Network (FRN) had this enthusiasm and passion which inspired them to found an amazing organization. The Food Recovery Network started when four students from the University of Maryland noticed perfectly good uneaten food in their school dining hall being thrown into the waste every day. They set to work attempting to recover the food before it was thrown out, gathering it up and giving it away as meals to those in need. By the end of a year, they had recovered over 30,000 meals and connected them to those in need within the DC area. Their dedication to fighting hunger through recovering food waste from all across America quickly launched a once small organization into a large-scale non-profit.

Over the course of August 2020 to June 2021, the FRN helped recover over one million pounds of surplus food from farms across the country. In partnership with another student-led organization, Farmlink Project, the two organizations recovered and distributed the equivalent of 885,000 meals to those in need during the COVID-19 pandemic. This summer, Planetary Design signed on to sponsor FRN to provide a donor-match opportunity for the month of June. Planetary Design agreed to match up to $5,000 in donations to the Food Recovery Network through the end of June.

Planetary Design is dedicated to helping both the people and the environment around us, which is why we want to broadcast the amazing efforts of FRN. Through the help of our supporters and the supporters of the Food Recovery Network, Planetary Design is excited to continue to help FRN work towards its goal of recovering food waste to help those in need. At Planetary Design, we try to encourage the use of environmentally-friendly items, like our refill bag or Airscape canisters, which were designed with food preservation in mind. We hope to continue to be able to support similar non-profit organizations in the future.
